Phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA) is the use of FIDO2-compliant security keys to authenticate access requests. This approach it nearly impossible for attackers to intercept or steal user credentials due to the difficulty of obtaining a legitimate key. It effectively neutralizes the threat posed by credential theft via phishing.

Cloudflare's Zero Trust platform enforces FIDO2 MFA consistently across various types of resources like SaaS, self-hosted applications, and non-web applications. This allows organizations to require strong authentication methods, even for applications that don't natively support FIDO2 MFA.

Implementing FIDO2 MFA with Cloudflare significantly reduces the risk of multi-channel phishing by preventing attackers from intercepting credentials. It also enhances access management by augmenting existing identity providers.

Cloudflare's own security team experienced a phishing attack where employee login credentials were stolen. However, due to the mandatory security key login requirement enforced by Cloudflare's Zero Trust implementation, the attackers were unable to gain access to their systems.

Enforcing FIDO2-compliant MFA with Cloudflare helps to mitigate account takeovers, supply chain attacks, data exfiltration, and ransomware, in addition to containing the fallout from phishing attacks.
